A Core Values List (100+), Grouped

A long values list is oddly comforting. You scroll through a hundred good words, nod at forty of them, and feel like you're making progress. You're not, really. Recognizing a value takes a second and costs nothing. Almost everything on a decent list sounds like something a reasonable person would want. That's the trap: agreement is easy, and easy is useless.

So here's a grouped list you can actually work with, organized into five clusters that map loosely onto the ten values behind this test. Read it to find the words that make you lean forward. Then keep reading, because the second half is where the real work happens: turning a fat list of things you like into a short list of things you'd defend when they cost you something.

How to read this list

Group the words, don't just skim them. Below, each cluster gathers values that pull in a similar direction, and each cluster sits near one or two of the ten core values this test measures. The clusters aren't rigid boxes. Discipline shows up in both achievement and integrity depending on why you're being disciplined. Put a value where it feels true to you, not where a taxonomy says it belongs.

As you go, mark anything that gives you a small physical reaction: a yes, or a flinch of recognition. Don't reason about it yet. You're collecting candidates, not making decisions.

The achievement and growth cluster

This is the drive to build, master, and become. People who live here measure a good year by what they made or how much they changed, not by how comfortable they felt. The shadow side is restlessness that never lets a win land.

The connection and service cluster

Here the unit of meaning is other people. Some in this cluster are pulled toward closeness (family, friendship, belonging) and some toward usefulness (service, generosity, stewardship). They often travel together but they aren't the same: you can love deeply and serve little, or serve widely and stay lonely.

The autonomy and adventure cluster

This cluster wants room. Autonomy craves self-direction and the freedom to decide; adventure craves motion, novelty, and a little risk. What ties them together is a low tolerance for being fenced in. The cost is that structure and long commitments can feel like a cage even when they'd serve you.

The security and harmony cluster

The quiet cluster, and often the most undervalued in a culture that worships hustle. Security wants stability, safety, and enough certainty to plan. Harmony wants peace, balance, and an absence of conflict. People here don't need the mountaintop; they need the ground to hold. Under pressure this can slide into avoiding necessary conflict or clutching the familiar.

The integrity and recognition cluster

An odd pairing on purpose. Integrity is about being whole, honest, and aligned whether or not anyone is watching. Recognition is about being seen, respected, and counted. They sit together because both are ultimately about how you hold your name, one from the inside and one from the outside. Many people carry both and never notice the tension until the two disagree.

The list is the easy part. Ranking is the point.

Suppose you've now got twenty highlighted words. Congratulations, that's the useless part done. Twenty values don't guide anything, because life rarely asks you to choose between a value and its opposite. Nobody agonizes over honesty versus cruelty. The hard choices are always between two goods: the promotion or the family dinner, the honest answer or the kept peace, the safe path or the interesting one. A values list that hasn't been ranked can't help you there, because both options are on it.

So force the comparison. Take two of your highlighted words and ask a specific, costly question: if honoring one meant sacrificing the other, which do I keep? Not which sounds better. Which survives when it hurts. Then hold the winner and pit it against a third word. Same question. Keep the winner, bring in the next challenger, and run it down the whole list. What's left standing after every duel is your real number one, and it usually surprises people, because the word that wins under pressure is rarely the word that sounded most impressive at the start.

You can do this by hand, and it's worth doing at least once slowly. Write each value on a card. Compare pairs. When you catch yourself justifying a choice instead of feeling it, slow down; the justification is often you protecting the value you're supposed to have rather than the one you actually live by. The goal isn't a tidy list of admirable words. It's a ranked handful you can use to make the next hard call in under a minute.
